Digiscoping -- The Tinkerer's Method!
My technique using Olympus Camedia digital cameras: April 2002 to October 2002 a C-150 1-megapixel; October 2002-August 2003 a C-520 2-megapixel; August 2003-January 2004 a C-5000 5-megapixel; January-November 2004 I switched to a C-50 5-megapixel; then in November 2004 I got a C-60 6-megapixel (the four-year warranty at Best Buy was a bargain!). In April 2005, I also started photographing birds with a Panasonic DMC-FZ20 5.3 megapixel digital camera with a 1.7 Olympus teleconverter, which increases the optical zoom to 20X. In May 2007 I bought a Panasonic DMC-FX3 with optical image stabilization. I am able to hold the camera up to my spotting scope lens and shoot the photo. It speeds up the operation considerably, though I think the image quality is not quite as good as I got with the Olympus C-60. In May 2008, the DMC-FX3 developed several dark spots on the lens, so I bought a 10-mp Panasonic DMC-FS5, which I also just hold up to the scope. In April 2005 I started using a Panasonic DMC-FZ8 with an Olympus 1.7 extender, which is hand-held and not used with my spotting scope. In 2008 I upgraded to a Panasonic DMC-FZ28, with the same Olympus 1.7 extender attached to it, which is also not used with my spotting scope. All of the photos taken with the Panasonic DMC-FZ8 and the Panasonic DMC-FZ28 were not digiscoped. They were taken with the camera hand-held.
